The depression in freezing point of wate...

The depression in freezing point of water observed for the same amount of acetic acid, trichloroacetic acid and trifluoracetic acid increases in the order given above. Explain briefly.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The order is, Acetic acid .lt. Trichloro acetic acid .lt. triftuoro acetic acid Thus. Trifluoro acetic acid ionises to the largest extent while acetic acid ionises to the minimum extent. The great the number of ions produced greater is the depression in freezing point. Hence. freezing point depression is maximum for fluoro acetic acid and, minimum for acetic acid.
