What is the nature of the solution obtained by mixing a) phenol and aniline and b) ethyl alcohol and H2O

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

a) On mixing phenol and anline. we get a nonideal solution because they differ in their polarity. In phenol there is .H. bond among the molecules. Simillarly in aniline also .H. bond is possible be-seen the molecules. But the extent of .H. bond is ore in their mixture. Thus the vapour pressure ill be less than expected from Raoult.s law. Hence ey show negative deviation. b) Ethyl alcohol - .H_2 O. mixture shows positive viation because the interaction between (1ylalcohol and .H, O. in the mixture is less than ht in ethyl alcohol alone or water alone. Hence pour pressure is higher than expected. Thus sitive deviation is shown by this mixture.
