What do you understand by activation of adsorbent & How is it achieved?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Activation of the adsorbent means to increase the adsorption power or capabilities of the adsorbént, it is necessary so as to increase the rate of adsorption. This can be achieved as follows i. Metallic adsorbents are activated by mechani cal itubbing or by subjecting it to some, chemical reactions. ii. sub-dividing the adsorbent into smaller pieces increases the adsorbing power of the adsorbent, As a result of sub-divišion the surface area of the adsorbent increases and therefore the adsorbing power increases. iii. Some adsorbents are activated by strong heating in contact with superleated steath. For example charcoal is activated by subjecting it to the action of superlieated steam
