"Adsorption is a surface phnomenon" comment on this statement

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

There are unbalanced or residual forces on the surface of a solid. These residual forces have a tendency to attract and retain molecules of other species. As these molecules remain only at the surface of a solid and do not go deeper into the bulk, their concentration is more at the surface thạin in the bulk. This phenomenon of higher côncentration of a molecular species at the surface of a solid is known as adserntion. Thus, adsorption is a surface phenomenon. Eg: Charcoal adsorbs the colouring matter from sugar solution.
