Due to the presence, of lone pair of electrons on the central atom both .NH_3. and .BiH_3. are Lewis Bases. The decrease in basic character from .NH_3. to .BiH_3. can be explained in terms, of electron density on the central atom. As the size of Bi atom is very large as compared to .N., the lone pair of electrons occupies a larger volume, i.e., electron density on central atom deccreases and consequently its tendency to donate a pair of electrons decreases. and hence basic strength decreases in .BiH_3.
