Why are halogens coloured?...

Why are halogens coloured?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Halogen molecules absorb light in the visible region by "means of which the outer electrons are excited to higher energy levels. The amount of energy required for the excitation ie., excitation energy. decreases prógressively from fluorine to iodine as the size of the atom increases. Thus there is a progressive decpening of colour from .F. to .L.
