Calculate the ‘spin only’ magnetic moment of `M^(2+)` (aq) ion (Atomic number Z of M= 27)

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

With atomic number 27 , the divalent ion in aqueous solution will have d. configuration (three unpaired electrons) .M=27-1 s^(2), 2 s^(2) 2 p^(b) 3 s^(2), 3 p^(6) 3 d^(2), 4 s^(2). .(M)^(2+)=(Is)^(2) .2 (~s)^(2) 2 (p)^(circ), 3 (~s)^(2) 3 (p)^(6), 3 (~d)^(prime). .therefore. The magnetic moment .mu. is (spin only) .mu=sqrt(3(3+2)[because mu=sqrt(n(n+2)]. .=sqrt(15) (~B) dot (M)=3.87 (~B)_(1) (M).
