Give example and suggest reasons for the following features of the transition metal chemistry: a. The lowest oxide of transition metal is basic, "the highest is amphoteric/acidic.

(a) In general, the oxides in the lower oxidation state-are basic and in their higher oxidation states, they are acidic. For example .(MnO)[+2]. is basic and .(Mn)_(2) (O)_(j)^(+). is acidic. .(MnO). dissolves in acids like .( )^(circ) (HCl). so it is basic: .(Mn)_(2) (O)_(2), (CrO)_(3). (higher oxidation state) -forms acids like .(HMnO)_(4). and .(H)_(2) (CrO)_(4^(+). (b) A transi-w tion metal extibits higher axidaition states in oxides and fluorides as fluorine-and oxygen are.highly electronegative elements (and strongest oxidizing agents). Foor example Os sliows an ox. state of .+6. in OsF arid .V. shows an oxidation state of .+5. -in .V_(2) (O)_(5). (c) Oxometal anion.s have highest oxidation state e.g. .(Cr). in .(Cr)_(3) (O)_(7)^(2-). has an oxidation state of .+6. whereas .(Mn). in .(MnO)_(4)^(-)., has an oxidation state of +7 This is again due to the combination of the metal with .0 x y. gen. which is highly electronegative and oxidizing element.
