On what ground can you say that Sc(Z=21)...

On what ground can you say that Sc(Z=21) is a transition element but Zn(Z=30) is not?

Transition elements are those elements which have partially filed d-subshells in their elementary form or in their most common oxidation state. Scandium and Zine are considered as transition and non-transition elements respectively because. In case of scandium the 3 rd orbital is aot completely filled. It.has a [Ar]3d"4 s" configurationi but In case of zinc. the 3 (~d). orbitals is completely filled. It has the configuration [Ar] .3 (~d)^(10) 4 (~s)^(circ). :
