Copper is the onty elemerit in the 1st ...

Copper is the onty elemerit in the 1st transition series with a positive reduction potential. why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electrode potential value depends on enthalpy of sublimation of the metal, the ionisatión entlalpy and the hydration enthalpy. The sum of enthalpies of sublimation and ionisatiori of copper is not balanced by the hydration enthalpy.. Hence Cur has a +ve value of reduction potential (+0.34V)

Copper is most noble of the first row transition metals and occurs in small deposits in several countries.Ores of copper include chalcanthite (CuSO_4,5H_2O) atacamite (Cu_2Cl(OH)_3) , cuprite (Cu_2O) , copper glance (Cu_2S) and malachite (Cu_2(OH)_3CO_3) . However, 80% of the world copper production comes from chalcopyrite (CuFeS_2) . The extraction fo copper from chalcopyrite involves partial roasting, removal of iron and self reduction. In self reduction , the reducing agent is
