Cr(2)O(7)^(2-) is a strong oxidising age...

`Cr_(2)O_(7)^(2-)` is a strong oxidising agent whereas `MoO_(3)` and `WO_(3)` are not oxidising agents. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The oxidation state ofCr, Mo and W in .(Cr)_(2) (O)_(2)^(2-). .(MoO)_(3). and WO ._(3). is +6 each. As we move down from C r, Mo to W, the higher oxidation states are mơe stable for heavier elements. Hence +6 state is stable in .(MoO)_(3). and .(WO)_(y). than that in .(Cr)_(2) (O)_(7)^(2-)..
