Explain a. The lowest oxide of a transition metal(Cr,Z=24) is basic whereas the highest oxide is usually acidic

Text Solution

-a. Lowest oxide of .(Cr). is .(Cr) (O). which is besic. Highest oxide of .(Cr). is .(Cr) (O)_(3).. The oxidation state of .(Cr). in .(CrO). is .+2. und in .(CrO)_(2) (in)+(6) .. Higher the oxidation state of the metal. more easily it can accept electrons and hence greater is the acidic character b. The .4 d. and 5 d transition elentents have targer size than that of .3 (~d). elements. Thus the valence electrotis are less tightly held and hence can form metal- metal bond easily.
