What is spectro chemical series ? Explain the difference betweena weak field ligand and a strong field ligand.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The series of ligands in which ligands are arranged jn increasing order of field strength is called spectrochemical series. Eg. .1^-ltBrltCl^-ltSCN^-ltF^-ltOH^-ltC_2 O_4^2-ltH_2 O. .ltNCS^-ltEDTA^4-ltNH_3ltenltCN^-ltCO. I-is the weakest ligand and .CO. is the ligand with the.maximum field strength. Weak fịeld ligand cannot cause pairing of electrons and will form high spin complex. whereas strong field ligand can cause pairing of electrons and will form low spin complex.
