How does the metal carbonyls gains stability although CO. is a weak donor?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Carbon monoxide, .CO. as a ligand binds itself to metal atoms through the carbon atoms. It is a weak donor and a weak base. It forms a weak .sigma. bond to the central atom, .CO., is also an acceptor ligand and forms ạ pi bond to the metal. This characteristic property of back bonding. stabilises the metal ligand interaction.

If in the mixed carbonyl, the other ligand is also pi acceptor, it would complete with the ligand CO for gaining the metal d_pi electron charge. The higher is the extent of back donationin CO, the lesser will be the stretching vibration frequency for C - O bond. If PPh_3 is better pi - acceptor than CO , then answer the following. Select correct order of stretching vibration frequency C - O bond in following molecules I. [Ni(CO)_4] II. [Ni(PF_3)(CO_3)]

Consider the following metallurgical processes in 1. Heating impure metal with CO and distilling the resulting volatile carbonyl boiling point 43^@C and finally decomposing at 150^@ to 200^@C to get the pure metal. II. Heating the sulphide ore in air until a part is converted to oxide and then further heating in the absence of air to let the oxide react with unchanged sulphide. III. Electrolysing the molten electrolyte containing approximately equal amounts of the metal chloride and CaCl_2 to obtain the metal. The processes used for obtaining sodium, nickel and copper are respectively
