Optically active 2 - iodobutane on treatment with Nal in acetone gives a product which does not show optical activity. Explain.

Text Solution

Optically active 2 - iodobutane reacts with Nal in acetọne, undergoes racemisation .therefore. the prodưct does not show optical activity. FIGURE When 2 -iodobutane .( I). is treated with . I^-. ion, it ụndergoes walden inversion .( SN^2.. renetion) to give 2-iodobutane (II) which is the enantiomer of I. And 2-iodobutane(II) undergoes walden inverșion to giveenạntiomer, (I), Because of these two walden inversions, a 50: 50 mixture of the two enantiomers is obtained i.e., optically actiye 2 - iodobutane undergoes racemisation.
