Wurtz reaction fails in case of tert - alkyl halIdes. Explain?

Alkylhalide reacts with sodium metal in wurtz reaction. But in presence of soduim tert - -alkyl halidé undergoes debydróhalogention instead of undergoing wurtz reaction. FIGURE sodium. Only .1^circ^prime. and .2^circ. alkyl halides undergo wurtz reaction and .3^circ. alkyl hallides prefer debydrohalogenation to form alkene.
