Explain the fact that in aryl alkyl ethers(i) the alkoxy groụp activates the benzene ring towards electrophilic substitution and (ii) it directs the incoming substituents to ortho and para positions in benzene ring.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In aryl alkyl ethers. the `+R` cffect of the alkoxy group (OR) increases the electron density in the benzene ring (as shown below) thereby activating the benzene ring towards eléctrophilic substitution reactions. FIGURE Since the electron density increases more at the two ortho and one para position as compared tò m - positions, therefore, electrophilic substitution reactions mainly occur at O and p -positivé. Explain how does theOH group attached to a carbon of benzene ring activate it towards electrophilic substitution?

Select the correct statement(s) given below: (I) Both - Cl group as well as - OCOCH_3 group deactivate benzene ring towards electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions.

Assertion: In monohaloarenes, further electrophilic substitution occurs at ortho and para positions. Reason : Halogen atom is a ring deactivator.

What is the decreasing order of reactivity amongst the following compounds towardsaromatic electrophilic substitution? (I) chlorobenzene (II) benzene (III) anilinium chloride (IV) toluene

Arene diazonium salts are more stable than alkanediazonium salts due to dispersal of the positive charge on the benzene ring. Obviously, electron-donating groups favour diazotisation by retarding the decomposition of diazonium salts to phenyl cation. The high reactivity of arenediazonium salts is due to the excellent leaving ability of the diazo group as N_2 gas. Consider the following ions: The reactivity of these ions towards azo coupling reactions under similar conditions is

All aliphatic amines are more basic than ammonia but due to delocalization of lone pair of electrons of the nitrogen atom on the benzene ring, aniline is a weaker base than ammonia. The basic strength of the substituted anilines, however, depends upon the nature of the substituent. Whereas electron-donating groups tend to increase, electron-withdrawing groups tend to decrease the basic strength. The base strengthening effect of the electron-donating groups and base weakening effect of the electron-withdrawing groups is, however ,more pronounced at p-than at m-position. However, due to ortho effect, o-substituted anilines are weaker bases than anilines regardless of the nature of substituent whether electron-donating or electron-withdrawing. What is the order of basicity of I. p-methylaniline II. m-methylaniline III, aniline IV. o-methylaniline
