Why `(CH_3)_3 C-O H` is less acidic than `(CH_3)_3` Si OH although 'carbon is more electro negative than silicon?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Silicon has empty d-orbitals and it forms d pi `-p pi` bonds with oxygen. Hence transfer of elec. tron occurs from `O` to `Si`. EIectron density around O decreases. It therefore, withdraws electrons of the `O-H` bond towards, it: Hençe `O-H` bond in `(CH_3)_3` Si OH breaks more easily than in `(CH_3)_3` C-OH and hence `CH_3_3 SiOH` is a stronger acid than `(CH_3)_2 COH`. Carbon does not have any avaitable d-orbitals.
