(i) How will you convert an alkyl halide into a primary amine having one more carbon atom than the alkyl halide used? (ii) Why do AMINES dissolves in mineral acids?

Text Solution

(i) The alkyl halide is treated with NaCN ro form an alkyl nitrile. The alkyl nitrile on reduction with LiAlH ._4. or Catalytic. hydrogenation forms a primary amine having one carbon more than the afkyl halide used. Equation (ii) The hitrogen atom in AMINES contains a lone pair of electrons which it can-donate. Thus they accept a proton from mineral acids to form a sa< which is water soluble. Eg:
R-NH_2+H^+ Cl^- rarr[R-NH_3]^* Cl^-
Water soluble sa<
