"Sucrose when hydrolysed with dil `HCl` undergoes inversion while maltose donot" Is the statement correct? Justify.

Correct. Sucrose is dextrorotatory but after hydrölysis gives dextrorotatory glucose and laevorotatory fructose. Since the lạevorotation of fructose '(-92.4^circ)^prime' is more than dextrorotation of glucose '(+52.5^circ)', the mixture is laeyorotatory. Thus bydrolysis of sucrose brings about' a chapge in the sign of rótation. fròm dextro '(+)' to laevo '(-)' and the product is named as invert sugar. Maltese on hydrolysis gives two molecules of 'D(+)' glucose. Here no change in optical rotation takes place. Therefore maltose when hydrölysed does not undergo inversion.
