The characteristic properties of natural rubber can be varied by vulcanisation. Illustrate.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The process of heating nataral rubber with sulphur to improve its properties is known as vulcanisation of rubber. There are double bonds in rubber molecules. These double bonds act as reactive sites. The allylic group. '-CH_2-', present at 'alpha=' position to the doouble borid is very reactive. During vulcanisation sulphur establishes cross-links at these reactive sites. The formation of cross-links makes the rubber hard and' stiff. It prevents the intermolecular mòvement of rubbers spring resultjng in change of physicál character of rubber. equation
