While visiting a marshy area surrounded by large number of trees, one notices number of long pointed structures raised above the water level. What may be these structures? Explain.

These pointed conical structures are called pneumatophores or breathing roots. They are negatively geotropic and seen in plants growing in swampy areas. They develop from the underground roots and rise vertically upwards above the ground. They have many minute pores through which gaseous exchange takes place.
