Calculate the magnetic moment of a dival...

Calculate the magnetic moment of a divalent ion in aqueous solution if its atomic number is 25.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The metal having atomic number `25` has electron configuration `[Ar]^(18)3d^(5)4s^(2)`. So its divalent ion in aqueous solution will have electron configuration `[Ar]^(183d^(5)4s^(0)`. Thus it has five unpaired electrons. `mu_("spin")=sqrt(5(5+2))=5.92 BM`.
