In the circuit arrangement shown in figure capacitor is initially unchanged At t = 0 switch is thrown to position '1' it remains closed till the current in the circuit becomes 50 % of maximum current then. Suddenly switch is shifted to position '2' (Assume all batteries are ideal)

Current through the resistor just after switch is shifted to position '2' is :

A

0

B

`(5 epsilon)/(R)`

C

`(5 epsilon)/(2R)`

D

`(3 epsilon)/(R)`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

When switch is thrown from position 1 to position 2

Total charge flown by battery
`Delta q=2C epsilon-(-Cepsilon//2)=(5C epsilon)/(2)`
Work done by battery `=(5 C epsilon)/(2)xx2 epsilon=5C epsilon^(2)`
Since initially (t = 0) charge on capacitor is `C epsilon//2` it becomes zero after some time and finally becomes `2 C epsilon` so energy first decreases then increases.
