To avoid the precipitation of hydroxides...

To avoid the precipitation of hydroxides of `Ni^(2+),Co^(2+),Zn^(2+) and Mn^(2+)` along with those of `Fe^(3+),Al^(3+) and Cr^(3+)` the third group cations, solution should be:

A

Heated with few drops of concentrated `HNO_3`

B

Boiled with excess of ammonium chloride

C

Concentrated to small volume

D

None of these

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Function of strong electrolyte `NH_4Cl` is to suppress the ionisation of `NH_4OH` so that the concentration of `OH^-` ions in the solution is decreased but it is sufficient to precipitate the third group basic radicals because the solubility prouduct of group III hydrooxides is lower than IV, V and VI group hydroxides. The `Cr(OH)_3darr` is slightly soluble in excess of precipitant , upon boiling the solution, `Cr(OH)_3` is precipitated.

Cations are classified into varius group on the basis of their behaviour against some reagents .The group reagent used for the classifaction of most common cation are HCI,H_(2)S,NH_(4)OH,(NH_(4))_(2)CO_(3) . Classification is based on whether a cation reacts with these reagents by the formation of precipitates or not . An aqucous solution which is sightly acids contains cattions Fe^(2+),Zn^(2+) and Cu^(2+) . THe rengent added in excess to this solution would identify the separate Fe^(2+) ion in one step is

Assertion : Cr^(2+) is reducing and Mn^(3+) is oxidising. Reason : Cr^(2+) and Mn^(3+) have d^4 configuration.

The d electron congfiguration of Cr^(2+) , Mn^(2+) , Fe^(2+) and Ni^(2+) are 3d^(4) , 3d^(5) , 3d^(6) and 3d^(8) respectively. Which one of the folowing aqua complexes will exhibit the minimum paramagnetic behaviour ? (At. No . Cr = 24, Mn = 25, Fe = 26, Ni = 28)

The solubility product of hydroxide of Fe^(2+) is .............than that of Fe^(3+) .

The correct order of the number of unpaired electrons in the ions Cu^(2+), Ni^(2+), Fe^(3+) , and Cr^(3+) is

Write doen the number of 3d electrons in each of the following ions: Ti^(2+),V^(2+),Cr^(3+),Mn^(2+),Fe^(2+),Fe^(2+),Co^(2+),Ni^(2+) and Cu^(2+) indicate how would you expect the five 3d orbitals to be occupied for these hydrated ions (octahedral).

The only cations present in the slightly acidic solution are Fe^(3+),Zn^(2+) and Cu^(2+) . The reagent that when added in excess to this solution would identify and separate Fe^(3+) in one step is:

Write down the number of 3d electrons in each of the following ions : Ti^(2+), V^(2+), Cr^(3+), Mn^(2+), Fe^(2+), Co^(2+), Ni^(2+) and Cu^(2+) . Indicate how would you expect the five 3d orbitals to be occupied for these hydrated ions (octahedral).
