Answer the following with relevant reason.
(i)Xenon has closed shell configuration but is known to give compounds with fluorine.
(ii)The boiling points of noble gases increase with increase in atomic number.
(iii)Why helium and neon do not form clathrate compounds with quinol ?

The correct Answer is:
(i)Xe has relatively lower ionisation energy among inert gases and thus the outermost shell electrons of Xe are excited to d-subshell and thereby showing unpaired electronic structure. Therefore Xe shows covalent bonding with fluorine showing sharing of electron pair.
(ii)Van der Waal's forces of attraction among molecules increase with their increase of atomic masses. Thus, higher energy is required to separate these molecules as to get gaseous state.Hence, the boiling points increase with increase of atomic masses.
(iii)The size of cavities formed during crystallisation of quinol is more than the size of helium and neon atoms.

How does xenon atom form compounds with fluorine even though the xenon atom has a closed shell configuration ?

Account for the following: (a) Sulphurous acid is a reducing agent (b)Fluorine forms only one oxoacid (c) Boiling point of noble gases increases from He to Rn.

Consider following properties of the noble gases. I. They readily form compounds which are colourless. II: They generally do not form ionic compounds. III: Xenon has variable oxidation states in its compounds IV : the smaller He and Ne do not form clathrate compounds. Select correct properties.

The noble gases have closed-shell electronic configuration and are monoatomic gases under normal conditions. The low boiling points of the lighter noble gases are due to weak dispersion forces between the atoms and the absence of other Interatomic Interactions. The direct reaction of xenon with fluorine leads to a series of compounds with oxidation numbers +2,+4 and +6. XeF_4 reacts violently with water to give XeO_3 The compound of xenon exhibit rich stereochemistry and their geometries can be deduced considering the total number of electron pairs in the valence shell. Argon is used In arc welding because of its:

Explain the following observations : (i) Many of the transition elements are known to form interstitial compounds . (ii) There is a general increase in density from titanium (Z =22) to copper (Z = 29).
