How to measure an unknown voltage using potentiometer.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The unknown voltage V is conneted across the potentiometer wire as shown in figure. The positive terminal of the unknown voltage is kept on the same side as to the source of the top most battery. When reading of galvanometer is zero then we sy that the meter is balanced. In that condition V=xl.

For measurement of potential difference, potentiometer is perferred in comparison to voltmeter because

Circuit for the measurement of resistance by potentiometer is shown in figure. The galvanometer is first connected at point A and zero deflection is observed at length PJ = 10 cm. In second case, it is connected at point C and zero deflection is observed at a length 30 cm from P, then the unknown resistance X is .

Draw a circuit diagram for the determination of the internal resistance of a cell using potentiometer. Derive the formula to be used.

Assertion A potentiometer is preferred over that of a voltmeter for measurement of emf of a cell Reason potentiometer does not draw any current from the cell.

Which of the following statements is correct during measurement of emf of cell by potentiometer ? .

What is the advantages of using thick metallic strips to join wires in a potentiometer ?

In a potentiometer wire experiment the emf of a battery in the primary circuit is 20V and its internal resistance is 5Omega . There is a resistance box in series with the battery and the potentiometer wire, whose resistance can be varied from 120Omega to 170Omega . Resistance of the potentiometer wire is 75Omega . The following potential differences can be measured using this potentiometer.

A standard cell of emf e_(0)=1.11 V is balanced against 72 cm length of a pootentiometer. The same potentiometer is used to measure the potential difference across the stndard resistance R=120 Omega . When the ammeter shows a current of 7.8 mA, a balanced lengh of 60 xm is obtained on the potentiometer. (i) Determine the current following through the resistor. (ii) Estimate the error in measurement of the ammeter.

A : parctically a voltmeter will measure the voltage across the battery but not its EMF. R : EMF of a cell is measured with the help of a potentiometer .

Assertion: Potentiometer measures correct value of emf of a cell. Reason: No current flows through cell at null point of potentiometer.
