Why is Bi(V) a stronger oxidant than Sb(V) ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Bismuth and antimony both belong to the nitrogen family and exhibit the +5 oxidation state. However, on moving down the group i.e., from antimony to bismuth, the stability of the +5 oxidation state decreases. This is due to the inert pair effect. Thus, Bi(V) is a stronger oxidant than Sb (V)
