Why is adsorption always exothermic ?...

Why is adsorption always exothermic ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Adsorption is accompanied by decrease of randomness, i.e. this factor opposes the process, i.e. `triangleS` is -ve. For the process to be spontaneous, `triangleG` must be -ve. Hence, according to eqn, `triangleG = triangleH - TtriangleS, triangleG` can be -ve only if `triangleH` is -ve.
