During the melting of a slab of ice at 273 K a atmospheric pressure

A

Positive work is done by the ice-water system on the atmosphere

B

Positive work is done on the ice-water system by the atmosphere

C

The internal energy of the ice-water system increases

D

The internal energy of the ice-water system decreases

The correct Answer is:
B, C

There is a decrease in volume during melting of an ice slab at 273 K. Therefore, negative work is done by ice-water system on the atmosphere or positive work is done one the ice-water system by the atmosphere. Hence option (b) is correct. Second, heat is absorbed during melting (i.e., dQ is positive) and as we have seen, work done by ice-water system is negative (dW is negative.) Therefore, from the first law of thermodynamics, with change in internal energy of ice-water system, dU will be positive or internal energy will increase.

Calculate the entropy change accompanying the conversion of 1 mole of ice at 273.1 K and 1 atm pressure into steam at 373.1 K and 1 atm pressure. At 273.1 K, the molar heat of fusion of ice, DeltaH_(f) is 6.00 kJ mol^(-1) and at 373.1 K, the molar heat of vapourization of water, DeltaH_(v) , is 40.6 kJ mol^(-1) . Also assume that the molar heat capacities, C_(p) , in the temperature range 373.1 to 273.1 K remains constant. Given that C_(p) = 75.25 m mol^(-1)K^(-1) and log 13.66 = 1.1354.
