In compounds of type `ECl_(3)`, where E=B,P. As or Bi, the angles `Cl-E-Cl` for different E are in the order:

A

`B gt P=As=Bi`

B

`B gt P gt As gt Bi`

C

`B lt P=As=Bi`

D

`B lt P lt As lt Bi`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

When `E = B` in `BCl_(3)` bond angle is `120^(@)` . When `E = P`, As or Bi in `ECl_(3)`, hybridization at E will be `sp^(3)`. Also, if central atoms are from same group, bond angle decreases down the group provided all other things are similar. Hence, the order of bond angles is
`BCl_(3) gt PCl_(3) gt AsCl_(3) gt BiCl_(3)`
