Can a solution of 1 M ZnSO(4) be stored ...

Can a solution of 1 M `ZnSO_(4)` be stored in a vessel made of copper ? Given that
`E_(Zn^(+2)//Zn)^(@) =-0.76V and E_(Cu^(+2)//Cu)^(@)=0.34 V`

Text Solution

Since, ` E_(Zn^(2+)|Zn)^(0)` = `- E_(Zn|Zn_(2+))^(0)` = -0.76 V, is at a lower potential than `E_(Cu^(2+)|Cu)^(0)` = 0.34V0.76 V, therefore, Zn can only lose electrons to `Cu^(2+)` ions. Conversely,`Zn^(2+)` cannot accept electrons from Cu and hence the following reaction will not occur. `Zn^(2+) + Cu rarr Zn + Cu^(2+)` In other words, `ZnSO_(4)` solution can be safely stored in a copper vessel
