Is it safe to stir 1M `AgNO_(3)` solution with a copper spoon? Give suitable explanation in support of your answer ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since, `E_(Ag^(+)|Ag)^(0)`=+0.80V is higher than ` E_(Cu^(2+)| Cu)^(0)` = `- E_( Cu | Cu _(2+))^(0)` = -(-0.34)= +0.34 V therefore, Ag+ ions can easily accept electrons from Cu. In other words, the following reactions will occur.
`Cu + 2Ag^(+) rarr Cu^(2+) + 2Ag`
Hence, 1 M `AgNO_(3)` solution cannot be stirred with a copper spoon.
