How does `Cu_(2)O` act as both oxidant and reductant? Explain with proper reactions showing the change of oxidation numbers in each example

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In case of `Cu_(2)O`,Cu is in +1 oxidation state. So, it can undergo both oxidation as well as reduction. That is why it can act both as an oxidant and reductant.
As an oxidant
`Cu_(2)O + H_(2) rarr 2Cu + H_(2)O`
