The main function of the stem is to properly spread out branches, leaves and flowers for their specific functions (manufacture of food and production of fruits/seeds). It also helps in the conduction of water, mineral salts and photosynthates, besides providing support to the branches. In addition to the positive phototropic nature, the presence of nodes and internodes and exogenously developed multicellular hair, are the chief characteristics of the stem.
