Nodule acts as a site for N, fixation. It contains all the necessary biochemical components, such as the enzyme nitrogenase and leghaemoglobin. The enzyme nitrogenase is a Mo-Fe protein and catalyses the conversion of atmospheric N, to NH, This enzyme is extremely sensitive to oxygen. To protect it from oxygen, nodules contain an oxygen scavenger, called leghaemoglobin (Lb), which is pink in colour and similar to haemoglobin of vertebrates.
