2 grams of a gas mixture of CO and `CO_2` on reaction with excess `I_2 O_5` yields 2.54 grams of `I_2`. What would be the mass% of CO in the original mixture?

A

60

B

30

C

70

D

35

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

`5CO+I_(2)O_(5)rarr 5CO_(2)+I_(2)`
This means that 1 mole of `I_(2)` is formed from 1 mole of `I_(2)O_(5)` and 5 mole of `CO`.
Hence, moles of `CO=5xx(2.54)/(254)=0.05`
Mass of `CO=0.05xx28=1.4gm`.
Now, Mass of `CO_(2)=2-0.4gm`.
Mass `%" of "CO_(2)=(0.6)/(2)xx100=30`
