Explain why the bond angle of H (2)O is ...

Explain why the bond angle of `H _(2)O` is `104 .5^(@)` while that of `F _(2)O` is `102^(@).`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both `H _(2)O` and `F_(2)` have a lone pair of electrons. But fluorine being highly electronegative, the bond pair electrons are drawn more towards F in `F_(2)O.` The bond pairs being displaced away from the central atom has very little tendency to open up the angle. But in `H_(2)O,` this opening up is more as bond pair electrons are closer to each other. So bond angle of `F_(2)O` is less than `H_(2)O.`
