Out of `CS_(2)` and `OCS` which have higher dipole moment and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both OCS and `CS_(2)` are linear molecules.
In `CS_(2)` individual dipoles are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction hence they will cancel each other and `CS_(2)` will be non-polar.
In OCS due to higher electronegativity of O as compared to S, individual dipoles are not equal in magnitude therefore it will have non-zero dipole moment and OCS will be polar.
