Ethyl alcohol is heated with conc. H(2)S...

Ethyl alcohol is heated with conc. `H_(2)SO_(4) at 170^(@)C`. The product formed is:

A

`CH_(3)-CH_(2)-OSO_(3)H`

B

`(C_(2)H_(5))_(2)SO_(4)`

C

`C_(2)H_(4)`

D

`C_(2)H_(5)-O-C_(2)H_(5)`

Text Solution

At `433-443K, C_(2)H_(5)OH underset(-H_(2)O)overset(conc. H_(2)SO_(4))rarrC_(2)H_(4)+H_(2)O`. Ethanol reacts with sulphuric acid at 383K to form ethyl hydrogen sulphate which under reduced pressures transforms into diethyl sulphate. At 413K, the product formed in this reaction is diethyl ether.
