Prove that the straight line `lx+my+n=0` touches the hyperbola `(x^(2))/(a^(2))-(y^(2))/(b^(2))=1` if `a^(2)l^(2)-b^(2)m^(2)=n^(2)`.

A

`a^(2)l^(2)+b^(2)m^(2)=n^(2)`

B

`a^(2)l^(2)-b^(2)m^(2)=n^(2)`

C

`a^(2)m^(2)-b^(2)n^(2)=l^(2)`

D

`a^(2)n^(2)-b^(2)l^(2)=m^(2)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The equation of the line is
`lx+my+n=0impliesy=(-(l)/(m))x+(-(n)/(m))`……`(i)`
We know that the line `y=mx+c` touches the hyperbola
`(x^(2))/(a^(2))-(y^(2))/(b^(2))=1` if `c^(2)=a^(2)m^(2)-b^(2)`.
So, line `(i)` will touch `(x^(2))/(a^(2))-(y^(2))/(b^(2))=1`, if
`(-(n)/(m))^(2)=a^(2)(-(l)/(m))^(2)-b^(2)impliesn^(2)=a^(2)l^(2)-b^(2)m^(2)`
