The correct Answer is:
D

(i) Be and Al both react with HCl to liberate `H_(2)`.
`Be + 2HCl rarr BeCl_(2) + H_(2) uarr`
`2Al + 6HCl rarr 2AlCl_(3) + 3H_(2) uarr`
(ii) Be renders passive with conc. `HNO_(3)` and so does not react. Conc. `HNO_(3)` is strong oxidising agent and forms very thin layer of oxide on the surface of metal. Similarly, Al become passive in conc. `HNO_(3)` due to formation of oxide layer on the surface.
(iii) Their carbides gives methane on treatment with water.
`Be_(2)C + 4H_(2)O rarr 2Be(OH_(2)) + CH_(4)`
`Al_(4)C_(3) + 12H_(2)O rarr 4Al(OH)_(3) + 3CH_(4)`
(iv) Their oxides, BeO and `Al_(2)O_(3)` are amphoteric.

Which of the following statements about polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) is not correct? PSCs do not react with chlorine nitrate and HCl, Type I clouds are formed at about 77^(@)C and contain solid HNO_(3).3H_(2)O , Type II clouds are formed at about -85^(@)C and contain some ice, A tight whirlpool of wind called polar vortex is formed which surrounds Antartica

Carboxylic acid, although unreactive to alcohols, reacts in the presence of small amount of conc. H_(2)SO_(4) or with 2-3% of HCl? RCOOH+R'OH overset(H^(o+))hArr RCOOR'+H_(2)O Which of the following is correct about the above reaction? I. This reaction is called Fischer esterification reaction. II. The equilibrium is shifted to R.H.S. if H_(2)O is removed by azeotropic distillation with benzene. III. The reaction of RCOCl and R'OH to give ester(RCOOR') is irreversible and more feasible than esterification of RCOOH IV. If the above esterification of RCOOH is carried out in excess of R'OH, the equilibrium is shifted to R.H.S.
