Two elements A and B form the compounds ...

Two elements A and B form the compounds AB and `AB_3`. If 0.25 mole of `AB_2` weighs 16 g and 0.25 mole of `AB_3` weighs 20, then the atomic masses of A and B are respectively

A

16,32

B

16,24

C

32,16

D

16, 21

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

molar weight of `AB_2 = (16 )/(0.25 ) =64`
molecular weight of ` AB_2 = ( 20)/(0.25 ) = 80`
let atomic weight of A and B be x and t respectively
then ` x+ 2y = 64`
` x + 3y = 80 or x = 32 , y= 16`
