Find the equation of a line which passes...

Find the equation of a line which passes through the point `(5,1)` and cuts, equal in magnitude but opposite in sign, intercepts on axes.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Here `b=-a`
Equation of straight line `(x)/(a)+(y)/(b)=1`
`implies (x)/(a)+(y)/(-a)=1`
`impliesx-y=a`…….`(1)`
This line passes through the point `(5,1)`
`:. 5-1=a`
`implies a=4`
From eq. `(1)` , the required equation of line
`x-y=4`
