Find a G.P. for which sum of the first ...

Find a G.P. for which sum of the first two terms is `- 4`and the fifth term is 4 times the third term.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
N/a

Let first term be 'a' and common ratio be 'r' of G.P.
`Now T_(5)=4*T_(3)implies ar^(4)=4*ar^(2)`
`implies r^(2)=4 implies r= pm2`
`and T_(1)+T_(2)=-4 impliesa+ar=-4`
`implies a=(-4)/(1+r)`
If r=2, the `a=(-4)/(1+2)=(-4)/(3)`
and G.P. `=(-4)/(3),(-8)/(3),(-16)/(3),....`
If r=-2, then `a=(-4)/(1-2)=4`
and G.P. =4,-8,16,....
