Solve 3x - 4y = 20 and x + 2y = 5....

Solve 3x - 4y = 20 and x + 2y = 5.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The given equations are 3x - 4y = 20 …(1)
and x + 2y = 5 …(2)
Multiplying equation (1) by 1 and (2) by 2, we get
3x - 4y = 20 ….(3)
2x + 4y = 10 ….(4)
Adding these equations, we get
5x = 30
implies x = 6
Substituting x = 6 in equation (1), we get
`3 xx 6 - 4y = 20`
implies 18 - 4y = 20
implies - 4y = 2
implies `y = - (1)/(2)`
Hence, the solution is `{:(x = 6),(y = -(1)/2):}}`.
