What are the various factors due to which the IE of the main group elements tends to decrease down a group ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The factors influencing on IE are
(i) Atomic radius (ii) Nuclear charge (iii) Screening effect (iv) Half filled, completely filled electronic configurations (v) Peretrating power.
`rarr` In main group elements in a group IE decrease from top to bottom
Reason: In groups from top to bottom size of elements increases hence IE values decreases.
