What is a mesosome in a prokaryotic cell? Mention the functions that it performs.

Extensions of plasma membrane into the cell in the form of vesicles, tubules and lamellae are called mesosome. They help in cell wall formation, DNA Replication and its distribution to daughter cells, in respiration, secretion and to increase the surface area of plasma membrane (absorption of nutrients) and enzymatic content.
