Why are the first ionization enthalpies of group 1 elements low?

Text Solution

The ionization enthalpy, is the energy required to completely remove an electron from a gaseous atom or ion. The closer and more tightly an electron is bound to its nucleus, the more difficult it will be to remove the electron and higher will be the ionization enthalpy. Group 1 elements have low first ionization enthalpies because the loss of an electron takes place readily to form a stable octet.
