Will geographical isolation be a major factor in the speciation of a self-pollinating plant species? Why or why not?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

1) Geographical isolation involves separation of a population of organisms ofthe same species that are capable of interbreeding. Being isolated for over several generations, the two isolated groups lose their ability to exchange genetic material. Hence they are unable to interbreed. This leads to the formation of new species.
Self pollinating plants, involve single plants. Hence geographical isolation does not affect these plants as both the male and the female organs involved in self pollinating are present in the same plant.
